FIRST VISIT EXPECTATIONS

First Visit

We care for your child as if they were our own.

We know that as parents, you appreciate being informed before arriving at the dentist. Below is an overview of what you and your child can expect during their first visit to Asheville Pediatric Dentistry.

Let’s get to know each other

Your child’s first visit is not only about our team getting to know them, but also about you getting to know our team. In the time we spend together, we encourage you and your child to ask questions, express any concerns, and share with us anything you want us to know to help make your little one’s care as individual as they are.

Part of getting to know your child and providing safe, personalized support involves reviewing their medical history. Certain medical conditions and medications and can influence treatment protocols – so you will be asked to provide a medical history and list any medications and their dosages (including vitamins and supplements).

Depending on your children’s age, digital x-rays may be taken and a comprehensive oral exam of their teeth, gums, mouth, and jaw will be performed, including a non-invasive oral cancer screening.

As part of this exam, we thoroughly review how to brush and floss with your child and review any areas that might need honing while they're in the chair. We show you, the parent, how to help a child who might be resistant to brushing, along with tips and suggestions for making it more fun.

Our team will review instructions for our comprehensive trauma assessment and how to reach us for after-hours emergencies.

Diet and snack suggestions for optimal oral health will also be given – we strive to help patients avoid dental problems.

Your Appointment

The scheduled appointment is reserved specifically for your child. Any change in this appointment affects many patients. If a cancellation is unavoidable, please call the office at least 24 hours in advance so that we may give that time to another patient.

We strive to see all patients on time for their scheduled appointment. There are times when our schedule is delayed in order to accommodate an injured child or an emergency. Please accept our apology in advance should this occur during your appointment. We will do the exact same if your child is in need of emergency treatment.

Please plan to arrive 5 minutes or more before your scheduled appointment. This will allow time to complete any additional paperwork and see your child on time.

If you arrive 10-15 minutes late for your appointment, you may be asked to reschedule for the next available appointment time.

For young children, restorative (fillings, extractions, etc.) procedures are scheduled in the morning. Children, as well as adults, are more prepared and do better in the morning for these types of procedures.

Again, please call at least 24 hours in advance if a cancellation is unavoidable so that we may give it to another patient.

Broken or missed appointments affect many people. If two (2) broken/missed appointments occur or two (2) cancellations without 24-hour notice, our office reserves the right to not schedule any subsequent appointments.

A parent or legal guardian (with official documentation) must be present during the initial examination and any restorative appointments.

If at any time you have questions, please feel free to ask our team or call our office. We are here to help in any way we can. We appreciate you entrusting your child's dental health to us!

You’re in great hands

Once a pediatric cleaning has been done by one of our amazing team members, one of our doctors will review your child’s exam results and x-rays (if any were taken) and talk with you about their findings. Together you can create a healthy, effective treatment plan that best meets your child’s dental and personal requirements. We can prioritize and stagger your treatments to give your child the smile they deserve in a timeframe that works for you.
